There have been a lot of stories floating around about me and a theoretical shopping spree at Sak's Fifth Avenue this past weekend. Let me squash the rumors now....
They are true.
I must say the draw to the clubs of NYC has taken me. I have a few friends that are into hardcore house music. In case you don't know, most of these clubs have a fairly strict dress code, especially for guys. I am game for the experience, even though it really isn't me. Perhaps it will grow on me. The only problem is with my current collection of clothing, I would most likely walk up to the front door in my best of the best, stand tall, proud, and get laughed at, possibly even told to go home.
So on Saturday I went to Sak's Fifth Avenue, and dropped a lot of money on two shirts and a pair of shoes. I now am the happy owner of a pair of Prada black leather loafers.
My brother asked me what I did this weekend and when I told him he started laughing hysterically in disbelief.
I don't know if many of you understand the significance of this purchase. While growing up I was the type of kid, that when taken to Dillards, or Macy's and told to just go find something I liked, I would run over to Kay-Bee Toy's and pick up a Transformer. When told I needed to pick clothing I liked, not toys, I would imitated a cat being held underwater.
Clothing, fashion, and dress code was not in my vocabulary until I turned 22, and even then I only replaced clothing when it was so stained and torn that I felt embarrassed to wear it in public. It was either that or 'my favorite shirts' would mysteriously disappear when I'd come home from college and my parents would do laundry for me.
The most common questions when a relative would get me a gift for Christmas or a Birthday, something along the lines of new pants or a very nice sweater or dress shirt, for example, was:
"Do you like it?" immediately followed, whether answered or not, by, "Will you wear it?"
So go ahead email me, call me, IM me. Ridicule me at will about my entry into the world of Yuppie-dome or Praise me for my entry into the real world of fashion.
Whatever your stance might be, know this: The shoes are extremely comfortable, and I look damn good in them!
